Helping Children with Stroke Parents: Enhancing Home Communication of School-age Children with their Parents who Suffer from Acquired Brain-based Communication Disorders

Presented by

Mrs Lorinda C.L.Y. Kwan (Lecturer,SEC)

ABSTRACT

This project supports the notion of a wider scope of speech therapy that follows the framework of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) (WHO, 2001).  Through development of a unique speech therapy resource, we pioneer a more family-based speech therapy approach that directly alleviates the domestic communication malfunction between children and their parents who suffer from a medical language impairment (aphasia) caused by cerebral vascular accidents (stroke). Escalating research evidence have shown that aphasia in parents can burden their children on their psycho-emotional well-being; and can later become an additional stress that hinders the stroke rehabilitation outcome of these parents.

While most efforts in speech therapy have been set on helping patients with aphasia, this project enhances a broader rehabilitation view by giving help to the families of the patients, especially children of these aphasic patients. (presentation PDF)
