Train the Trainers:
Teaching a Simplified Style Tai Chi for the Elderly in France

Dean of Graduate School)

ABSTRACT

For population aging, the increase in functional limitations and resulting loss of autonomy are due to multiple factors, including falls. Practicing Tai Chi has shown to be useful in reducing the risk of fall. In a Health Care Promotion Grant, the researchers developed a simplified form of 8-style Tai Chi for young adults with minor physical disabilities. The 8-style was later re-designed as a 9-style form to suit older people. On the other hand, Tai Chi has become very popular in France lately; the French have been behind (compared to other developed countries such as USA and UK) which has attracted the attention and interest of many French not seen previously. Recently, the research team has been working with Tai Chi coaches in France to promote Tai Chi more pro-actively. The primary purpose of the present KT project is to produce and promote a user-oriented package of the 9-style Tai Chi for trainers to teach Tai Chi to the elderly in France. (Presentation PPT)
