Production and Promotion of an Evidence-based

Exercise Manual for Children with Autism Spectrum

Disorder in Primary School

Presented by
Dr YU Chung Wah Clare (Assistant Professor/HPE)

ABSTRACT
The “Diversity (Multidimensional) Aerobic Exercises for children with ASD, ‘Train the Trainer’ Manual” is an exercise manual that is mainly aimed at the needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It prepared by an expert team from the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). The manual is divided into two parts: one for three to six year olds (kindergarten level) and the other for six to 12 year olds (primary school level). It is specially designed for ASD children according to their respective characteristics, abilities and needs. Children are divided into small groups and receive aerobic exercise training in the form of games and physical activities, which include different elements, such as aerobic and resistance training, fundamental movement skills, speed, and plyometric and agility development, to benefit the children, especially the younger age group.

With the support by the Knowledge Transfer Fund from the EdUHK, we promoted the use of the exercise training manual in professionals including physical education teachers in primary schools and kindergartens of Hong Kong, parents, healthcare providers from NGOs and exercise coaches. A press conference was held to launch this exercise training manual to the public in 2018. We attracted a good number of media and the press conference was reported in major mass media in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Canada and Taiwan. Two training workshops on the exercise manual had been held in April and July, 2018 at EdUHK. Training were provided to 160 school teachers, social workers, nurses, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, parents and undergraduate students from Hong Kong and Macau. The exercise manual for children with autism spectrum disorder also received the Silver Medal at The International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada 2018 (iCAN 2018). The award proves the recognition by the society that the development of scientific knowledge of our work can contribute to the wider community.

The kindergarten manual has undergone pilot studies in two specialised child care centres and six centres from a non-government organisations (NGO) that jointly run the ‘Train the Trainer’ Programme. The Programme result showed that participants experienced a positive impact on their physical fitness, their ability to follow instructions, their language and social skills, and their concentration levels through doing exercises in the manual. These projects had equipped 30 staffs from the NGO the skills to run our program and trained 60 ASD preschool children. The training projects are extending to primary schools, with 50 students with ASD, ADHD, and dyslexia already received the training. Preliminary results showed that primary school children with ASD have their physical fitness, attention span, and communication skills improved after the exercise training. (Presentation PDF)
