EdUHK Survey: 18-to 30-year olds most at risk of developing anxiety

2022-07-20

Dr Kevin Chan jointly conducted a survey with the Re:Fresh Online Mental Health Self-help Platform under the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service. The survey has found that 18- to 30-year-olds are “most at risk” of developing anxiety during the current COVID Pandemic.

The survey assessed the mental wellness of Hong Kong residents during the pandemic, and found that nearly half of the users of the self-help platform showed “moderate to severe” signs of anxiety during the fifth wave, with those aged 18- to 30- year-old most at risk.

“This age group faces a lot of life adjustment issues including academic pressure and employment issues,” Dr Chan said. “Such residents staying at home with their parents might encounter tensions due to lifestyle differences.”

Dr Chan revealed that the number of people seeking online mental health services increased by 66% in the first quarter of 2022, compared with the last quarter of last year.

EdUHK researchers also looked into the effectiveness of online counselling support and interactive mental health workshops. They encouraged Hong Kong people to make use of online services to prevent mental problems.
