INTRODUCTION
This programme is a response to the increasing importance of ethnic minority-related cultural, political and social issues in Hong Kong, East Asia and the rest of the world, as well as recent developments in the social sciences which have brought the concepts of "intercultural studies", "citizenship" and "ethnicity" together into a complimentary sub-field. Students will acquire knowledge and direct application of theories related to the interaction among education, cultural pluralism, ethnicity and citizenship, thereby enabling them to contribute to the creation of a just and tolerant multi-cultural society during their professional careers.

PROGRAMME AIMS
The major objective of this programme is to equip students with theoretical knowledge and its direct application related to the interaction between education, ethnicity and cultural pluralism, so that they can utilize the knowledge to critically examine empirical ethnic issues in Hong Kong, mainland China and East Asia.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The programme offers both complementary degree and single degree of Master of Social Science Education (Ethnicity and Global Citizenship). The complementary degree is jointly offered by The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) and University of Illinois and the single degree is solely offered by the HKIEd.  For the complementary degree, students can be taking the Master of Social Science Education (Ethnicity and Global Citizenship) [MSocScEd] provided by the HKIEd; and Master of Education(Ed.M) in Educational Policy Studies with Emphasis in Global Studies in Education provided by the University of Illinois simultaneously. After completing the 10 courses which are required to complete the HKIEd’s MSocScEd programme, as well as 8 courses offered by the University of Illinois (with some courses to be cross referenced), students will be awarded a MSocScEd from HKIEd and a Ed.M from the University of Illinois. For single degree, students are requested to complete the 10 courses offered by the HKIEd. The programme curriculum is subject to revision. Please check the up-to-date programme information at our website.

PROGRAMME CURRICULUM
The programme comprises 30 credit points (cps). Each course is worth 3 cps.

In the first year, 10 courses will be offered, which will be broken down into core courses (two), courses in the Global Section (four) that cover topics relating to the global community, and courses in the Domestic Section (four) that cover topics primarily focusing on the local community in Hong Kong. From the second year onwards, more courses will be offered so that students have greater choice to select from.
