EdUHK Receives Donation from LKSF to Promote E-learning Platforms and Set up Scholarships

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has received a generous donation of HK$10 million from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF) in support of innovation in teaching and learning through e-learning platforms as well as a scholarship scheme for competitive recruitment of top talents to EdUHK.

The LKSF donation will be used for the first time to support two e-learning platforms, namely Cornerstone Maths, developed by world renowned Stanford Research International (SRI), which promotes mathematics e-learning in local secondary schools, and Arguendo, used in conjunction with English learning to develop critical thinking skills, designed by the University of Toronto.  Supported by the LKSF, these two state-of-the-art e-learning platforms will equip local pre-service and/or in-service teachers with quality teaching methods, which will in turn enrich the learning experience of students in Hong Kong.

Cornerstone Maths will deploy Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for establishing visualisation and interactivity elements in the platform to facilitate the communication and formation of mathematical concepts in the learning process. Arguendo will help local secondary students develop dialogical skills - questioning, challenging, answering, responding and clarifying - through dialogues and role-play around short essays or arguments drawn from texts selected by teachers or created by students.

Six types of scholarship have also been established to recognise students with outstanding achievements in sports, music or the visual arts. Beneficiaries will also include outstanding Mainland students in EdUHK’s Taught Master’s Programmes, and outstanding international students enrolled in the University’s undergraduate programmes. Please see the Appendix for details of the scholarships.

Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang, Council Chairman of EdUHK, said, “I would like to convey my utmost gratitude to the LKSF for its support for the University. Young people today are the pillars of tomorrow, and I believe the beneficiaries will make a great contribution to different aspects of society in the future.”
