EdUHK Hosts WERA Focal Meeting and HKERA International Conference 2017

Under the theme “Innovation, Reform and Education Change in a Contemporary World”, the World Education Research Association (WERA) and Hong Kong Educational Research Association (HKERA) International Conference 2017 began today (30 November) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), attracting more than 400 participants from over 20 countries and regions.

Hosted by EdUHK and co-organised by WERA, HKERA, the Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability (CEES) and the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC) of EdUHK, the three-day conference will provide participants from around the globe with an invaluable platform for discussing and exchanging research-based knowledge on issues related to educational reforms in the new era.

Professor Lui Tai-lok, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK, welcomed the opportunity to host the conference this year, commenting that “the conference is a good platform for bringing together education practitioners, researchers and policy-makers from both Hong Kong and overseas to discuss and work together strategically for the promotion of innovation, reform and educational change to meet the challenges in education posed by global changes in the new era.” Also sending a warm welcome to guests at the opening ceremony were Dr Felice Levine, President of WERA, and Dr Li Jun, Chairman of the HKERA.

The conference also features seven keynote speakers, including Professor Cheng Yin-cheung and Professor So Wing-mui Winnie of EdUHK. Jointly delivering the keynote speech, Professor Cheng drew global implications of education reforms from Hong Kong lessons, while Professor So discussed some of the global and local lessonsrelated to STEM education.

The conference will feature various symposia on 1 and 2 December. Among the highlights of the three-day conference are the Hong Kong School Education Forum and the Design & Make Fair – BITS for Life, both on 2 December.

The Hong Kong School Education Forum will be led by 18 renowned and experienced local educators, who will share insights on “Computational Thinking Education”, “STEM Education” (in collaboration with the Singapore Science Centre), “Inclusive Education”, and “National Education”.

In the Design & Make Fair – BITS for Life, students from 32 local primary and secondary schools will exhibit their STEM-related innovative works. The fair will also demonstrate to the public the latest advancements in STEM education in local schools.
