“Jockey Club From Words to Culture Programme: An Animated Way to Learn Chinese” Project - EdUHK Presents “Chao Yat and Tiddler’s Chinese Word Pool Exhibition”

In 2018, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) launched the three-year “Jockey Club from Words to Culture Programme: an Animated Way to Learn Chinese” project to create multimedia Chinese language teaching materials for primary students, in collaboration with famous local artist Chao Yat (Mr Leung Chung-kei) in the production of the Tiddler’s Chinese Word Pool animation.

As part of the project, EdUHK will run the “Chao Yat and Tiddler’s Chinese Word Pool Exhibition” from today (27 March) to 30 April at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, displaying Chao Yat’s original sketches and drawings that contributed to the animated series. During the exhibition, there will also be an online “sentence writing” competition and a colouring competition to engage both children and parents in pleasurable learning.

Inheriting Chao Yat’s humorous and childlike style, Tiddler’s Chinese Word Pool introduces children to the family and school life of the cute and energetic protagonist, Tiddler. Each episode in the series opens with a Chinese radical and includes in the plot four Chinese characters and words. The interesting and lively animated series is educational in the way that it cultivates children’s interest in Chinese language and culture and develops moral values. A total of 24 episodes, each supplemented with a lesson plan and teaching materials, will be completed in three years to benefit all local primary schools. They are available on the project website for free: https://chin.eduhk.mers.hk/animation.php.

The project was made possible thanks to a generous donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, and is led by President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, together with co-leaders Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President (Academic) & Provost; Professor Tong Ho-kin, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Dr Tse Ka-ho, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Chinese Language Studies; and Dr Fung Chi-wang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies.
