EdUHK Unveils its First Annual Report

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) released the first Annual Report since its establishment last May. Among other things, the 2015/16 Report captures the University’s phenomenal progress and achievements over the past year in relation to its attainment of university title, learning and teaching, research and knowledge transfer, partnership and community engagement, as well as pledged donations. Highlights are as follows.

  • The former Hong Kong Institute of Education was retitled The Education University of Hong Kong on 27 May 2016, upon publication of the Government Gazette.
  • In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2016, EdUHK was ranked second in Asia and 12th in the world in Education, which surpassed the 2015 rankings of third in Asia and 15th in the world.
  • Three new five-year education programmes were launched in September 2016, namely the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Chinese History), the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Science) and the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Geography). Moreover, as part of its efforts to prepare committed and skilled talents to work for the well-being of people with special needs, a four-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Special Education programme was launched.
  • Three new University Grants Committee-funded co-terminal double degree programmes, all launched in September 2016, were developed: the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Creative Arts and Culture and Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Music), the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Creative Arts and Culture and Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Visual Arts), and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Language Studies and Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language). These programmes are designed to further strengthen the competitiveness of EdUHK graduates and synergise education and complementary programmes.
  • The University was awarded funding amounting to HK$13.27 million from the General Research Fund and Early Career Scheme for 27 new projects in the Research Grants Council’s 2016/17 research funding cycle. The projects go beyond the University’s traditionally strong Education area, spanning the subject disciplines of Humanities and Arts, Civil Engineering, Surveying, Building and Construction, Psychology and Linguistics, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
  • The University recorded its best-ever fundraising results, with over HK$164 million in donations pledged by various donors, foundation and grants. Amongst the pledged donations, HK$40 million was received during the year.

Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, EdUHK President, said that “with the birth of EdUHK, 2015/2016 was an exceptional year for the University community. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the support received from our colleagues, students, alumni and stakeholders, which enabled all these impressive achievements”. He went on to note that “with our leadership in Education and added strengths in related multidisciplinary areas, EdUHK will strive to become a leading university with a focus on Education in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.”
