Quality of Graduates Testified by Positive Perception and High Employment

Observations

According to CIRD Director, Professor Cheng Yin-cheong, the following observations can be drawn from the 2005 Graduate Employment Survey:-

- The high employment rate has helped dispel the misconception that prospective teachers are suffering from unemployment in the face of ongoing challenges of class shrinking and school closure.

- Apart from language teaching, an area commonly perceived as having a pressing demand for qualified teachers, HKIEd graduates in all other sectors are also highly competitive in the employment market.

- The findings mirror the aforementioned Independent Survey on Teacher Attributes and Teacher Education Programmes in Hong Kong conducted by the City University of Hong Kong, which revealed that HKIEd graduates were most preferred by principals of primary and early childhood education sectors, when compared with graduates of other teacher education providers.

- The popularity of HKIEd graduates among school principals attests to the effectiveness of our programmes in equipping student teachers with all-round attributes to cope with the imminent demands emerging from changing societal needs and various education reform measures.

Conclusion

In the years to come, the education sectors will continue to face a reform process which calls not only for new or enhanced skills, but also a change of mindset and fresh perspectives within the teaching profession. As a prominent player in the education community, the Institute will give of its best efforts to nurture prospective young teachers and provide support for serving teachers and schools, to cope with the demands of continuous professional development and implementing the education reforms.
