Achieving
language standards comparable with benchmark examinations
English major students are exempt, through their degree studies, from
the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) which requires all teachers
to demonstrate their language proficiency by passing the government's
Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT) examinations. Not
content with relying on the exemption alone to guarantee standards,
the Institute has developed its own Internal Test of English Language
Proficiency which is comparable to government standards. Students majoring
in English must reach the standard defined by this assessment before
they are allowed to progress to their final year.
In the same way, Chinese major students who intend to take Putonghua
Teaching Methodology as an option have to sit for an Internal Test of
Putonghua Proficiency which they are expected to pass before being allowed
to take the relevant modules. This rigorous process has helped to ensure
that the language standards of our prospective language teachers are
comparable to the LPR levels set by government.
