Seminar 1

Innovative Applications of Generative AI in Teaching

Prof YU Leung Ho Philip

Prof YU Leung Ho Philip

Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology
Associate Director of University Research Facility of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence,
The Education University of Hong Kong

Abstract

Unlock the potential of generative AI to enhance teaching quality and support student success! This seminar will share two specific innovative applications: (1) multimodal AI-based autonomous language learning; and (2) AI-generated teaching video synthesis. For the first innovation: When students observe and describe common objects and situations, we utilize multimodal AI models to analyze visual images and automatically generate learning content such as vocabulary, sentences, and dialogues. Simultaneously, the system evaluates students' responses in real-time and provides feedback, helping students autonomously improve their English writing skills through human-machine interaction. For the second innovation: Based on teachers' teaching materials, personal avatars, and voice, we employ generative AI technology to create explanation scripts, teacher avatars, and various assessment exercises, ultimately automatically synthesizing interactive learning videos to help teachers easily conduct blended teaching.

Abstract

The "Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education Three U Framework" presents an approach to integrating AI into primary and secondary education. This framework emphasises three dimensions: understanding, using, and unleashing AI's potential. The "understanding" dimension focuses on fostering conceptual understanding of AI technologies among teachers and students, ensuring informed engagement. The "using" dimension explores practical applications of AI to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of teaching and learning, such as individualized learning. The final dimension, "unleashing," addresses the transformative opportunities AI in equipping future generations to create meaningful value in working with AI. The framework highlights the challenges of utilising generative AI to enhance the capabilities of everyone in an AI-driven society.
