精英运动员体验式学习之旅

Au Chun Ming (Squash), Ma Tsz Hei (Squash) and Tam Dickson Joe Dick (Triathlon), three elite-athlete students in Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management, MSocSc(SCM), had experienced a unique journey during the past few months. They were selected to work as trainees at OnBoard For Good Limited/One Stretching Recovery Centre during Semester 2 of 2019/2020 to fulfill the core course requirement of “Experiential Learning in Sports Industry”. This course aims to provide students an opportunity to learn by doing and engaging in the real-life workplace environment. These elite-athlete students expressed that they had gained a lot on developing their dual career pathway, which can equip them with a solid foundation to stretch their potential in the sports industry.

I started my experiential learning in mid of Jan, my role was to provide support to the staff in OnBoard For Good. I was also assigned to assist in preparing for an important event - "Once OnBoard A Time". It was a very new experience for me as I had no working experience in the past and I had been a full-time athlete since 2010. While working at OnBoard, I think the most valuable thing that I have learnt is Creating Shared Value (CSV), the objective of the organization and the skills of solving problems. CSV is a business concept by creating value for both the organization and the society while CSR is mostly beneficial to the society only.

Thanks EdUHK for providing such a valuable opportunity for me to join the experiential learning. The experience and skills that I learnt from this experiential learning are practical and useful. It is definitely a great help for my career and I hope I can apply it well in my sports future.

Ma Tsz Hei – A Retired Elite Athlete of Hong Kong Squash Team

At the beginning, I did not have much confidence in completing the task to recruit and collegiate athletes to sign up the website of OnBoard For Good assigned by my supervisor during the outbreak of COVID-19. Luckily my supervisor gave me lots of suggestions and marketing skills on how to tackle the difficulties, so the task was completed successfully at last. The most useful thing I have learnt is how to promote by using social media effectively and I recognize the areas I need to be strengthened in the future. From this experience, I think I need to improve my social skills to establish a social network with business contacts with people you work with or friends.

Thanks OnBoard and EduHK for providing me the opportunity to participate in this experiential learning. I have a valuable chance to learn how to apply my knowledge in real-life situation and enrich my practical experience, equipping myself well for stepping into the society. This experience allows deeper understanding on what I have studied which can enhance my self-confidence. Such useful and meaningful journey has definitely formed part of the wonderful memories in my university life.

One Stretching Recovery Center is the organization of my experiential learning, Mr Yeung, the founder of the center, inspires me a lot and I feel very interested in his mission on raising the awareness of the public over stretching and helping to relieve pain for the patients, in order to create a healthy and pain-free lifestyle in the society. My major duty was to design an e-leaflet about trigger points. I was assigned to search information on how to find the trigger points and how to release them by using massage tools. I have acquired lots of knowledge, including stretching techniques, human anatomy, and I have improved my communication skill through working with the colleagues.

Thank you for the flexible arrangement on the experiential learning catering for my current job status. I am feeling fresh to work in different environment. I not only can gain other working experience but also widen my horizon.
