The First Successful Online Conference for PE Teachers in Hong Kong amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic (English Version Only)
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced major conferences and meetings to be cancelled everywhere in the world. The annual Hong Kong PE Teacher Conference, co-organized by the Department of Health and Physical Education, EdUHK (HPE) and The Hong Kong Physical Education Association (HKPEA), had faced the same challenges and had to postpone their usual summer calendar dates in June this year. With the concerted effort of the conference organizers, the creative and fast-react Organizing Committee members including HPE colleagues Mr. Kevin Kam, Dr. Bob Sun, Dr. Gary Chow and Mr. Roy Chan, are looking for new ways for the PE professionals to meet together virtually for useful and meaningful dialogue and exchanges when the pandemic situation is getting worse in Hong Kong.
The first ever Online Conference for PE Teacher had been held on 23 July 2020. The conference attendance had broken the record with more than 420 participants this year while their feedbacks were overwhelmingly positive. We were honored to have Dr. Lobo Louie, Associate Professor of Department of Sport and Physical Education and Associate Director of Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre for Physical Recreation and Wellness, Hong Kong Baptist University, to kick off with a Keynote Speech on the theme “The Future Physical Education”.
14 presentations on the parallel sessions (8 for primary schools and 9 for secondary schools) with 3 school-based sharing, 8 action research findings, 3 knowledge enrichment seminars together with 2 sessions of lesson analysis were presented online for participants under the theme.
In addition, except for the first workshop in action research which had been held in October last year, all the other practical workshops in the series would be turned into online mode to be conducted in late July and August this year, focusing on enhancing PE teachers’ pedagogical competence in promoting a variety of PE content in schools specifically in online environment.
