I am interested in studying how language changes, both diachronically and synchronically, and the inter-relationship between language and human activities. I have undertaken different types of projects on Chinese linguistics, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, supported by General Research Fund, Early Career Scheme, Knowledge Transfer Fund, Central Research Fund, Teaching Development Grants, SCOLAR
I have supervised three doctoral students and they worked on very different topics: Two on Chinese dialects and one on language policy issues of Kazakhstan. My way of training graduate students is to provide them with more intellectual space to brainstorm and build their profile. I always encourage my students to join workshops, conferences as an attendee or a presenter. These opportunities can help them to build up their confidence and learn from other scholars and peers and finally, transform into a scholar
I welcome students who are interested in the topics of linguistic typology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, and Chinese linguistics.

關於項目及獎項:
One of the main project outputs of Dr Andy Chin is The Corpus of Mid-20th Century Hong Kong Cantonese. The corpus provides an important source of natural and authentic language data for studying the Cantonese language of the past. Since its launching in 2012, the corpus has drawn a lot of media attention. In 2019, the corpus won a gold medal and a special award at Silicon Valley International Invention Festival. The corpus has also derived other products such as CanPro which earned a silver medal at 2021 Geneva’s Inventions Expo. The corpus-based studies of Cantonese prepared by Dr Chin as an impact case in Research Assessment Exercise 2020 was rated 3-star (i.e., with considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance)
Dr Chin is also a recipient of Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship for Overseas Studies (2000-2002), Young Scholar Award for Best Paper conferred by the International Association of Chinese Linguistics in 2009. HKIEd President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Research (under the category of Early Career Research Excellence Award) in 2013.
