Melbourne Early Childhood Education Study Tour

19 May 2024 - 27 May 2024

In mid-May 2024, 15 teachers and students from the Department of Early Childhood Education embarked on a nine-day, eight-night study tour to Melbourne. Teachers and students tried to understand the importance of play in the learning process from the perspective of young children, and how to use play to inspire their potential. The group visited the renowned Conceptual PlayLab at Monash University, where each student brought a cherished storybook to the PlayLab, further exploring the significance of story selection and playful environment setting. Through the presentations of PhD Candidates there, the students also learned how to incorporate play-based concepts into their teaching.

In addition, the tour also visited early childhood education sectors there, including the Cornish College Early Childhood Education Centre and HEI Schools, gaining insights into the Australian early childhood education system and teaching and learning models. They found that Australian schools leverage their geographical advantages, utilizing natural resources and open-ended learning environments to encourage children's autonomous exploration. These experiences will greatly benefit the students' future teaching practices. The students were deeply impressed by the "trust" those Australian teachers place in children, allowing them a great room of freedom to explore and learn actively.

The fruitful 9-day itinerary also included visits to the Melbourne Museum, the Art Centre and renowned landmarks such as the Brighton Bathing Boxes, the Twelve Apostles, and Loch Ard Gorge, where the smiles from teachers and students could be seen in the photos, making this trip truly memorable for all participants.
