2021-07-30

Professor Joanne Hughes, of Queen’s University Belfast, will deliver FEHD's final Distinguished Visiting Professors Online lecture.

Promoting social cohesion through shared education in a post-conflict society: A case study from Northern Ireland will explore the concept of shared education. This idea promotes curriculum-based learning between pupils and teachers from separate schools within an education system that is divided on ethno/religious lines.

Professor Hughes will examine the effectiveness of shared education in Northern Ireland as a way to promote social cohesion in a deeply divided society. She will also look at the impact of shared education has had there, as well as the challenges that remain.

Following Professor Hughes’ lecture, a panel will discuss the dynamic between different groups in the community, the importance of school leadership and government in the promotion of cohesion and diversity, as well as the applicability of shared education in Hong Kong.

The panel includes:

  • Professor Hue Ming Tak, Professor of EdUHK
  • Professor Liz Jackson, Professor of EdUHK
  • Dr Miron Bhowmik , Assistant Professor of EdUHK
  • Mr Arnett Edwards, Principal of Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong
