FEHD celebrates success at the President’s Awards

2021-05-10

FEHD swept the board at the President’s Awards for Outstanding Performance in Research and Knowledge Transfer 2020/21 this month. These awards recognise the Faculty’s excellence in research and knowledge transfer.

Dr Randolph Chan, Dr Chen Junjun and Dr Li Jianbin won the Early Career Research Excellence Award.

Dr Randolph Chan’s research looks into the mental and behavioral health of marginalized populations, particularly sexual and gender minorities.  “I feel so honored and humbled to be recognized among a group of outstanding researchers at the University. The award means a lot to me, not only because it is an important recognition of my research efforts and accomplishments, but also because research on sexual and gender diversity is being seen and acknowledged.”

Dr Chen Junjun’s research focuses on teacher and principal well-being and psychometric measurement. “The occupational well-being of school principals and teachers are crucial to the effective and sustainable operation of schools,” she said. “I am trying to establish a school well-being cascade as an impact case to mitigate school well-being issues in Hong Kong.”

Dr Li Jianbin studies well-being from childhood to emerging adulthood. “I feel deeply honored to receive the President's Award in Research. I hope my research would bring theoretical advancement of the focal research topic and inform culturally sensitive practices to facilitate positive development in young people,” he said.

Dr Kean Poon and Dr Pansy Tam won the Outstanding Performance in Knowledge Transfer.

Dr Kean Poon’s projects trained over 200 undergraduates to provide quality school-based learning support for over 500 low-income primary and secondary school students with special educational needs. She also built two award-winning electronic training applications to enhance the executive function of SEN children. These two apps benefited 500 students in Hong Kong and will be translated into English.

She said, “I hope our projects and apps can help SEN students from grassroots families receive tutoring support and training at a very low cost.”

As a devoted researcher of drama education in Chinese education contexts, Dr Pansy Tam led a drama education project which aims to innovate the local preschool curriculum and pedagogies. This project benefited 85 kindergartens, 1,008 preschool teachers and 14,380 children.

“Over the past few years, I have been blessed with many opportunities to develop culturally appropriate and effective ways of promoting drama education in local kindergartens. All these achievements are motivation to continue my scholarly pursuit,” she shared.

The online presentation ceremony will be held on 27 May.

As the President’s Awards illustrate, we continually strive to raise our standards. By helping everyone to focus on making their work more productive, and more enjoyable, we seek to take everything we do to the NEXT LEVEL.
