The Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD) held its Aspiring Professors Workshop on 25 November to support academic staff at EdUHK in understanding the pathway to full professorship. The event was attended by 24 staff from FEHD and other units of the University during the trail run.
Professor Bruce Macfarlane, Dean of FEHD, opened the workshop by discussing the pathway to professorship and the wider meaning of the role. He highlighted the importance of academic leadership, competitive grants, high quality publications and contributions to the academic community. He also encouraged participants to reflect on their professional goals as part of their career development.
During the workshop, Ms Cindy Cheung, Director of Human Resources, outlined the application procedures for professorial appointments and offered useful advice on preparing an effective submission. The workshop also welcomed Professor May Cheng, Vice President (Academic), who joined the session to answer questions about criteria and expectations for promotion.
The programme included a CV review and discussion led by a panel of full professors. Panel members were Professor Kerry Kennedy, Professor Junjun Chen, Professor Kevin Chan, Professor Eva Lau, Professor Alfredo Bautista, Professor Sedat Gumus and Professor Da Jiang. They shared their experiences and provided guidance on strengthening academic profiles.
Professor Macfarlane remarked, “Supporting the professional development of our staff is central to the work of the Faculty. The Faculty will organise the workshop again next year as part of our Faculty Strategy to help colleagues gain a clear understanding of their career direction and to support both mid-career and early career researchers in planning for future growth.”
The workshop reflects FEHD’s continuing commitment to staff development and to creating an environment that supports academic advancement. The Faculty will continue to introduce initiatives that promote staff development and career progression at all levels. -
