FEHD innovations win eight international awards

2022-01-13

FEHD collected six awards at the 6th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN), as well as two medals at the 12th International Innovation and Invention Competition (IIIC) in Taiwan.

The awards included a gold, silver, and bronze, as well as three special prizes at iCAN and two golds at IIIC.

C&I’s Prof John Lee Chi-kin and Prof Jim Chi-yung were awarded a gold and an International Special Award at iCAN, for their Tree Assessment for Life Education (TALE) Project. The project aims to raise public awareness of urban tree preservation, and cultivate users’ appreciation of life and other species.

The project’s app helps users learn basic botanical knowledge, and allows them to assess trees using the Visual Tree Assessment technique. The app also gathers georeferenced data for research and environmental education.

ECE’s Prof Kevin Chung Kien-hoa and Dr Ian Lam Chun-bun bagged a gold medal at IIIC and a silver medal and the International Special Award at iCAN for their system which evaluates children’s level of socioemotional competence. Their Chinese Inventory of Children’s Socioemotional Competence is the first culturally responsive assessment system developed in Asia, targeting Chinese children. The system is also a conceptual framework and reliable indicator which can be easily used by kindergarten teachers.

SEC’s Prof Leung Chi-hung applied eye-tracking technology to drug treatment and rehabilitation and won a gold medal at IIIC. The project was the first in Hong Kong to use computerized implicit psychological tasks with eye-tracking to assess drug abuse and rehabilitation progress. This technology helped measure attentional bias in drug rehabilitees, with an accuracy of 90%.

ECE’s Dr Pansy Tam Po-chi developed a toolkit that encourages teachers to break out from the confined narratives of picture books and look for innovative ways to retell a story. Dramaflow – Idea Generation Dice for Planning Process Drama Lessons earned her a bronze medal and the Best 10 Woman Inventors Award at iCAN.

Dramaflow helps teachers develop compelling Process Drama lessons for early childhood education and stimulate interesting teaching ideas, so that children can actively explore, imagine and create.

As the awards illustrate, FEHD encourages innovations that contribute to the community as well as enhance human well-being. By integrating new technologies and ideas into the education field, we strive to take our impact on learning and teaching to the NEXT LEVEL.
