Structure of Chinese for Education
This course aims to provide participants with knowledge to understand and compare basic phonological and grammatical structures in Chinese, especially those that have bearing on typological differences between Modern Standard Chinese (the written form of the official language in China), including Putonghua (the spoken counterpart of Modern Standard Chinese) and Cantonese, the home language of 90% of Hong Kong’s population. Participants will also be introduced to the linguistic history, varieties and the distributions of Chinese and Cantonese dialects. Focus will be placed on the grammatical differences between Modern Standard Chinese and Cantonese, and the phonological differences between Putonghua and Cantonese. Upon completing this course, participants should have a better and deeper understanding of Chinese and linguistic variations among the dialects, especially Cantonese.
