ECE freshmen awarded scholarship

2020-11-20

Four HD(ECE) freshmen were awarded the prestigious Faculty-based Entrance Scholarship.

The scholarship aims to recognise the outstanding academic performance of HD(ECE) students as well as their non-academic achievements in the field. Each student will receive HK$16,000. The four students Chui Wing Yan, Leung Sze Ching, Tsang Yu Tung and Yu Nga Sze aim to use the scholarship to subsidise their tuition fees.

Chui Wing Yan started volunteering in kindergartens and special schools when she was a secondary student. “I used to think it was difficult to get along with kids with special educational needs. But actually, they can be outgoing if you take the first step to encourage them,” said Wing Yan. “It’s so satisfying helping the little ones, and watching them learn and achieve.”

Yu Nga Sze found her passion teaching the children at church. “These experiences inspired me to pursue a career in early childhood education.  It’s very meaningful to become a kindergarten teacher; the first teacher in a child’s life,” she said.

Tsang Yu Tung has spent her first semester assisting with research. “EdUHK really has provided me with a lot of work-learning opportunities. This semester, I’ve assisted a research project by working in kindergartens as a student tutor. It really gave me hands-on experience and prepared me for work placements,” she said.

Despite the suspension of face-to-face classes, the freshmen are trying their best to get involved in campus life.

“Apart from large lectures and classes, our lecturers always divide us into small groups for breakout discussions and collaborations. So it has been easy to make new friends and adapt university life,” said Leung Sze Ching.

FEHD strives to produce outstanding early childhood educators to nurture and inspire our next generation. We aim to help our students strive for the NEXT LEVEL.
