New CCFS book boosts child literacy

2021-07-27

The Centre for Child and Family Science (CCFS) has released a new E-book and app designed to help children learn English as well as boost their social-emotional development.

Joy of English Language Learning for Young Children features 12 parent-child activities, and uses nursery rhymes, games, and stories to develop children's knowledge of what letters look like, how they sound, as well as introducing new vocabulary. The book also provides useful tips for parents on shared reading to help create an environment at home that encourages their children's literacy.

“The home learning environment is important for children’s language competencies. Through the evidence-based learning activities, parents can cultivate the interest and develop confidence of learning English for their children.” Prof Kevin Chung, Director of CCFS, said.

The centre has also released an app for teachers is to promote positive psychology - Positive Education and Social-Emotional Development in Early Childhood: Training Programme for Teachers and Parents (EASP).

Throughout the pandemic, the ESAP project has trained 80 pre-service teachers and 76 in-service teachers. The teachers found the training improved their social-emotional health. To help build on this, CCFS developed an app to help teachers strengthen their well-being.
