FEHD student wins President's Commendation Scheme

2020-04-03

FEHD student James Wong Hau Fung has been awarded the President’s Commendation Scheme for his outstanding achievements in community service.

James, who is studying for the MScESLPLD, has dedicated himself to serving underprivileged families, especially students with special educational needs (SEN).

Using funds awarded by the Yan Oi Tong Social Innovation Competition, James founded parent support group Senmily HK. The group provides information, consultations, workshops, and activities for families with SEN children.

Now, with help from the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, James is developing a set of board games to strengthen parent-child relationships. He also trains volunteers who will work for the group in the future.

“What I've learned from the MScESLPLD programme has helped me to design activities that suit the SEN student needs. It's also helped me develop a network in the social service sector.” James said.

James will be a speech therapist after graduation this summer. “I was a SEN resource teacher in primary schools and I enjoyed serving the SEN students. I hope I can work in schools after graduation.”
