This course will introduce participants to a range of reflective and experiential learning theories, such as Dewey’s philosophy of experiential education, David Kolb’s experiential learning cycle, Schön’s conception of reflection and professional development, and Boud’s theory that relate reflection and emotion in experiential learning. Participants will use the experiential learning theories to critically review, analyze and evaluate the existing experiential learning activities in the settings of schools and other educational contexts with a particular reference to the context of Great China. A range of experiential learning activities will be examined in the course, including field trips/school-related travel, work-based learning, outdoor recreation and adventure education, community service, aesthetic development activity. Participants are also expected to develop an innovative experiential learning project/activity for a certain group of people on the basis of one or more experiential learning theoretical perspectives.
