DIGITAL GAMES AND LEARNING IN EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS
Module Synopsis
單元概要
This course examines how the opportunities of digital games could be taken up in educational settings to support and enhance learning engagement and outcomes. It first explores the opportunities provided by digital games for learning engagement that include immersive environments (e.g. backstory, role-playing and 3D virtual environments), learning by doing (e.g. task-oriented activities, and experimentation without real world consequences), and communities of practice (peer support and learning, teamwork, and shared practices and understanding). However, there may be issues and challenges in educational settings that may hinder these opportunities to be taken up. These issues may include technical (lack of technical support, lack of time), structural (inflexible time-table, lack of professional learning opportunities), and cultural (teachers’ perceptions of teaching and digital technologies). This course then draws upon case studies of how digital games have been situated in different educational settings to formulate guidelines for education practitioners, game developers, and instructional designers to use digital games to support and enhance learning engagement and outcomes. The changing roles of teachers and students may serve as a springboard for the transformation of culture and practices in educational settings.
