STUDY TOUR ABROAD: CONFLICT AND PEACE IN CENTRAL EUROPE
Module Synopsis
單元概要
Central Europe has been the site of much conflict through history. Such conflicts have seen generations severely damaged as a result. By selecting a country/region in Central Europe for study, this course asks how a peaceful and inclusive society might be constructed from its conflicted past. Students will prepare themselves for the study tour in the following four themes: (a) cultural heritage and national identity; (b) oppressors and oppressed; (c) armed and ideological conflicts; and (d) moving forward (building a peaceful society). Using Germany as an example,* the four themes will be: (a) cultural heritage and national/German identity; (b) Hitler’s Germany and the Holocaust; (c) the Cold War experience and its aftermath; and (d) reunification for a new European Germany. Students will work in teams to explore how a peaceful and relatively inclusive society has learned from its past experience. Students’ will enhance their historical and civic sensibility by relating the past to the present. *It might be possible to identify other countries/regions in Central Europe as a case study when appropriate, for example, when considering wars and alliances between Central European countries. This would depend on staff expertise. Learning resources related to these four themes would be developed accordingly.
