TIME’S UP: APPROACHING AND ENDING HARASSMENT |
Module Synopsis 單元概要 |
Harassment is a widespread phenomenon that we invariably face in our lives, or at least have witnessed in some settings. Yet, we seldom ask: Why does harassment keep happening? Are we able to cure this social malaise, and if so, how? This course aims to explore the root causes of harassment, from stereotype, bias, discrimination to harassment and bullying. Through reflecting and analyzing the complexities of harassment in school settings by an interdisciplinary approach, students can gain deeper insights into the dynamics of power relationships and realize that the root causes of harassment are often embedded in culture, language usage, construction of social identities and structures, as well as formal institutions such as legal systems and informal ones like traditions and practices. Critical understanding of these issues will help students to formulate effective strategies for approaching the phenomenon with reference to cultural-linguistic, sociological, human rights and legal perspectives. By sensitizing students to issues of harassment in education settings, this course helps nurture their sense of responsibility in defending the dignity of all, particularly “vulnerable" social groups, in a safe and harassment-free society. In this course, bullying will be used as an example of illustrating the causes and phenomenon of harassment. |
