CITIZENSHIP AND DIVERSITY: FOUNDATIONS OF SCHOOLING IN A GLOBAL AGE
Module Synopsis
單元概要
Schools are important institutions that create opportunities for young people to achieve their potential and prepare them to become effective citizens of their nations. Yet, as “the nation” becomes a contested concept in an interconnected global community, how are schools defining citizenship? As studies reveal a shrinking middle-class, increasing poverty, and a growing concentration of wealth amongst the elite, what are schools’ responsibilities? This course tackles these issues in examining the implications of educating young people in a globalizing world. Specifically, students will investigate the challenges posed to schooling in cultivating identities and citizenship within rapidly changing contexts and advancing the principle of equity amidst increasing social disparities. One focus of the course surveys the history of schooling, such as the ancient Greek model that catered to sons of noble families, the massification of schools during the Industrial Revolution, and the progressive movements of the twentieth century. A second focus examines ideologies that inform education in the twenty-first century, including neoliberal principles that link schooling to the global economy, multicultural approaches that argue for the recognition of multiple identities, and cosmopolitan perspectives that promote universal frameworks such as human rights. A third course focus examines the context of Hong Kong to reveal how education reflects various ideologies, how education has shaped students’ identities, understandings of citizenship, diversity and reimagines how schools can bridge disparities based on culture, language, and social class.
