AN EXPERIENTIAL JOURNEY OF EMBODIED LEARNING: CIVIC EDUCATION |
Module Synopsis 單元概要 |
This course designs a purposeful journey for participants to immerse into first-hand experiences while embarking on an exploration of citizenship-related issues. Participants of this course are viewed as a unified whole, the mind and the body being interconnected in an embodied state. This holistic path of embodied learning encourages participants to construct their knowledge not only by head, but also by heart and hands. Participants of this course are expected to explore themselves inwardly from bodily senses to feelings, thinking and being, as well as inquire outwardly from bodily senses to doing and belonging as someone who cares and has compassion for peoples and things in the outer world. The course weaves different civic education themes (e.g. global sustainability, knowing the local community, equality, justice) and skills (e.g. critical and creative thinking, collaboration, advocacy) into an experiential journey. It provides ample time and space for sensory and bodily exploration to rethink values and actions as a citizen from personal, local, national, regional, and global perspectives. To be a citizen means to reconcile our being as individuals and our belonging as a member of the community. The focus of embodied experiences helps us to look deeply at what and how we receive from the outer world and rethink its inward meaning for ourselves. The end-of-course review facilitates participants’ reflection on the role of embodied experiences in learning and education in respect of civic mission and brainstorming ways to use their insights to design and implement experiential learning for others. |
