Module Synopsis
單元概要
Educational changes, especially under the strong influence of neoliberalism; perplexing issues and micro-politics in the day-to-day context of teaching and learning; as well as the changing and challenging political and social climate of Hong Kong, have placed tremendous professional demands, including emotional demands, on teachers. Such demands are sometimes in conflict with the caring and relational work of teachers. This course examines teachers’ emotional experiences in relation to rules and norms that are socially constructed in cultures and institutions, which in turn affect professional practice, identity and agency. It offers students an analytical lens of emotional experiences from the sociological and critical perspectives. In addition to investigating the nature of teacher emotions, this course goes beyond the management of emotions and stress as a way to promote teacher well-being and effectiveness. It supports students to reflect on the importance of developing and exercising agency to negotiate their emotional experiences and make space for professional growth, ethical practice, education innovation or transformative change through having the courage to take risk and feel vulnerable. Students with some experiences in teaching or working with children/young people would find this course particularly helpful.
