Module Synopsis
單元概要
The aim of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to explore the value of NGOs (non-government organizations)/SEs (social enterprises) in society and experience how the NGOs/SEs achieve the social mission with innovative practices, such as providing services to minority groups and providing flexible working opportunities for women rearing children. Through engaging in service learning, this course seeks to balance academic rigor with practical relevance, set in a context of community engagement that equips students with a broader and richer educational experience. The participation in services (e.g. short-term internship) and associated educational experiences (e.g. lecture, exploration and presentation) provide a partial solution to broadening young people’s life experiences in different social sectors such as NGOs, government units or community centres. Students are expected to work closely with organizational staff, volunteers and clients so that they could understand the purpose, development, operation, joy, as well as difficulties of NGOs/SEs in serving disadvantaged individuals/groups in Hong Kong. Students’ perspectives and attitude towards serving the community will also be enhanced through the process of learning, thus further enriching the whole person development.
