Editors: Dr. Hou Jie

January 2011

Synopsis:

Zhang Bolin, a well-known modern Chinese educator and social activist, devoted himself to promoting physical education and spirituality reconstruction for Chinese people. Based on text analysis of Da Gong Bao, Yi Shi Bao and Tientsin Young Men, this paper deeply explores the reasons why Zhang Bolin advocated physical education , and indicates the historical and modern meanings of his discourses and activities referred to whole-person education. What he pursued was the holistic development among body, mind, and spirit. The Chinese traditional culture and Christianity were both absorbed to reconstruct the spirituality of Chinese people. It is no doubt that Christianity and the spirits of YMCA played an important role during Zhang Bolin’s life and career.

CRSE Occasional Paper Series: Religious Education That is Spirituality Education | Publisher: Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education

Editors: prof. Ng Tze Ming

September 2008

Synopsis:

Spirituality is the basic need in the situation of human existence. It includes search of self, self-affirmation, search for meaning of life and purpose of life, etc. Therefore, no matter psychologists, humanist scholars or educators are concerned about spirituality education. Reviewing the development of religious education in Hong Kong in the past 40 years, there have been a few stages of changes, which were similar to the curricular reform in UK. Religious education changed from Biblical knowledge as core to ethical education. Then it changed from ethical education to civic education, and life education and spirituality education later. These changes reflect that religious education is the search for education of quality of life. Therefore, religious is human life, life and livelihood. From the perspective of religious phenomenology, there may be many different Divine Worlds, however, there is only one Human World. Spirituality Education becomes our common ground that we can launch life dialogue with educational meaning with people from different religious beliefs or even those without religious beliefs. Spirituality Education becomes an important bridge of religious dialogue.
