Course Introduction

Each human being has his/her own life journey. Obviously, disadvantageous or adverse conditions are unavoidable for individuals. What are the factors that affect our ability to maintain the tranquility of mind? Furthermore, the ability to bounce back from such negative experience with “sufficient functioning” is called resilience. Personally, we can learn about what strategies for building resilience might work by focusing on past experiences and sources of our own strength. Moreover, the society plays an important role in fostering resilience. Resilience is also dependent on peer support or group cohesion. Therefore, belonging to sub-cultural groups or religious institutions may have some effects on a person’s resilience. The testimonies of representatives, such as artists of different sub-cultural groups and the disciples of various religions may help us to examine the resources in these communities for building resilience. Although we do not all react the same to traumatic and stressful life events, reflections on how to utilize such resources may enhance the stability of our life journey. This course provides a platform through which participants can utilize the resources in daily cultural and spiritual experience to build resilience.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • To rethink the implication of “Life is a Journey” metaphor;
  • To evaluate how the social, cultural and personal factors influence our resilience;
  • To reflect on the resources contained in different cultural contexts and religious thoughts that can be utilized to build resilience;
  • To analyze how the survivors with such sub-cultural and religious backgrounds overcome their life struggles; and
  • To propose healthy lifestyle according to the participants’ stage of journey, in terms of reflections throughout the course.
