Socio-scientific issues in Liberal Studies classroom
Abstract:
The
use of socio-scientific issues has been recognized as an effective way to
develop students' critical thinking skills and social awareness in science
education since 1980s. In Hong Kong , Liberal Studies is one of the core
subjects for the New Senior Secondary curriculum. This subject will employ
the issue-enquiry approach to develop students' critical awareness of
contemporary and perennial issues from three areas of study. One of the
three areas of study is 'Science, Technology and the Environment'. How
could students get benefit from the use of socio-scientific issues in the
Liberal Studies classroom? This workshop will focus on:

the nature of
socio-scientific issues;

selection of
socio-scientific issues for New Senior Secondary Liberal Studies
Curriculum; and

the use of
socio-scientific issues in Liberal Studies classroom.
