Abstract

Over the last decade, Afghanistan has made great progress rebuilding the education system after thirty years of war. At the fall of the Taliban in 2001, only about 1 million children were in school, and almost none of them were girls. Today, 8.6 million children are enrolled in school, of which 39 percent are female. UNESCO works closely with government ministries to strengthen quality education and support government efforts to achieve Education for All goals. Ms. Dianne Denton, the Project Officer for TVET at UNESCO Office in Afghanistan, will discuss the current challenges and future opportunities for the education system in Afghanistan.

Speaker

Ms. Dianne Denton is an Education Project Officer at the UNESCO Office in Kabul, Afghanistan. Before joining UNESCO in February 2013, she worked in Tanzania and Canada’s Arctic on non-formal education programs. Her work at UNESCO focuses on technical and vocational education and training (TVET), education policy and planning, and peace and inclusive education. She holds a Master’s of Education in International Education Policy from Harvard University.
