Abstract:

UNESCO has been mandated as the lead agency for the promotion of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), a concept requiring far-reaching changes in the ways education is often practiced today. Specifically, it is a vision of the world which integrates the values inherent in sustainable development into all aspects of learning in order to encourage changes in behavior, thereby allowing for a more just society for all. In an imagined future where resolution of world issues must be brought about through peaceful means, the arts, through their innate ability to effect social and cultural change, would appear to be ideally placed to take up such challenges.

However, while there are certain similarities, there are also important differences between the two worlds that require consideration. This seminar explores what Education for Sustainable Development means in practical terms for the arts and culture and arts education, firstly by exploring some of the areas that can serve to unite them, together with the potential for possibly synergies, and secondly by drawing on specific examples from the work that UNESCO-RLCCE undertakes in both its community- and research-based capacities, particularly with regard to the guidelines for action outlined in the Seoul Agenda: Goals for the Development of Arts Education (2010).
