ABOUT

Communication skills are important for delivering messages clearly and concisely. In view of this, the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) is organizing "English Speech Contest 2020" so as to bring out students’ creativity, improve their public speaking skills and English proficiency. As this is an activity under the Student Enrichment Scheme of the Centre, the Contest aims to nurture the students of the University by enhancing their public speaking skills and building their self-confidence as participating individuals.

THE CONTEST

THEME

The theme of the contest is “Love” as the event will take place in February and will be close to the Valentine’s Day. Participants are required to make a 3-minute prepared speech on “Love”, followed by a 2-minute impromptu speech. Participants have to send in copies of their speeches before the contest and they may consult the International Tutors for advice. No foul language is permitted. The content of the speeches should be original; if with reference, the reference should be mentioned before giving the speech. The speech may be in any form, such as a monologue or poem, conducted impromptu or with the intention to entertain or persuade.

ELIGIBILITY

    All students enrolled in full-time programme in The Education University of Hong Kong.

Students will be required to submit their online applications, together with a video of themselves on Youtube where they will do a one or two-minute speech on what they enjoy the most about learning English or other languages (see below for Video Requirements). Each of the students should state clearly his/her NAME, STUDENT NO. at the beginning of the video. The Contest bears no responsibility for incompatible file format or bad video quality, which may affect the Panel’s decision. CLE reserves the full right to decline non-compliant entries.

Release of shortlisted results

March 25, 2020

Shortlisted students are required to send in copies of their speeches at least one week before the contest and they may consult the International Tutors for advice. Each contestant should give a speech on the topic, ‘Love’. Duration of the speech should not exceed 3 minutes and contestants will be required to do a 2-minute impromptu speech after the prepared speech section.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  1. Content: How relevant the speech is to the topic given
  2. Pronunciation: How well the speaker can enunciate and deliver the speech
  3. Poise: How appropriate the body language and the tone of the speaker is
  4. Length of Speech: Each speech should not exceed 3 minutes 

PRIZES

Winners will be awarded with coupons and certificates. Finalists will receive a certificate of participation.

VIDEO REQUIREMENTS

1. The video should be shot with landscape orientation which can show the upper body of the contestant.

2. The video should be recorded in a single attempt without editing.

3. The video should be seen and heard clearly without any noise interference.

4. The contestant will be disqualified should the above requirements are not met.
