EdUHK English Proficiency Test (EEPT)

What is EEPT?

EdUHK English Proficiency Test (EEPT) is organised and conducted by the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) to measure the language proficiency of the students of the University. The aim of the test is to find out your English proficiency levels and where you can have improvements. Students will be required to join the test at least 20-30 minutes before the start of the test. Students are advised to book their tests early in order to secure their preferred test time slot.

Target Student

New full-time undergraduate Year-1 students of EdUHK who have not attempted Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE): English Language within 5 years are required to take EdUHK English Proficiency Test (EEPT) unless they qualify to be exempted from the test. (See Exemption section below). Relevant students will be provided with the online registration form via email sent from CLE (eept@eduhk.hk).

Date of EEPT 2023/24

The EEPT will be held from 21-30 August 2023 at ASLLC (B3-G-05). A face-to-face test mode will be adopted.

Consequences of not taking EEPT

Students who are required to take EEPT in the said period but failed to do so are required to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic) at any officially authorized IELTS testing provider (i.e. British Council or IDP Education Pty Ltd) at their own expense and to provide a valid IELTS test report form to the CLE by the end of October.

Students who failed to do so will NOT be allowed to register for CLE1252 (Skills for English Language Tests I), which is a credit-bearing mandatory English Enhancement course in Year 2 Semester II, which could ultimately lead to a delay in graduation.

Exemption

Students may be exempt from the English language proficiency test if they could submit the scores of the following tests by filling in the online form and submitting a copy of the official scores. Relevant students will be provided with the online form via email sent from CLE (eept@eduhk.hk).

*Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test (TOEFL iBt) or TOEFL iBt Home Edition

 

*Please present the scores from a valid certificate. The score validity is of two years counting from the date of receiving it. The certificate will be considered expired once the date crosses the validity period.

How does EEPT work?

EEPT will test the full range of English skills needed for success in your studies in the University. You will take all the tests at an official test venue or on an online platform with a high standard of identity verification and proctoring. The whole test takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. You will be assessed on the following skills:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Make-up test

If you are unable to attend your test due to circumstances beyond your control, including medical emergencies, you must contact the CLE office (eept@eduhk.hk) immediately.

If you are absent due to medical reasons, you must obtain a “Certificate of Sickness” issued by a registered medical practitioner that states the diagnosed condition/illness and recommends a period of sick leave that covers the test date.

Test components (Listening)

The Listening test is designed to assess a wide range of listening skills, including how well you

  • understand main ideas and specific factual information
  • recognize the opinions, attitudes and purpose of a speaker
  • follow the development of an argument

Format of Listening Test

There are 2 listening quizzes. In each quiz, you will listen to a recording of 5-8 minutes and then write your answers to a series of questions.

Timing

The Listening part takes approximately 12-13 minutes per quiz, and you are allowed 1 minute for checking the questions before the test and another 2 minutes for writing and checking the answers.

Each correct answer receives one mark. Scores are reported in levels.

Test components (Reading)

The Reading test is designed to assess a wide range of reading skills, including how well you

  • read for the general sense of a passage
  • read for the main ideas
  • read for detail
  • understand inferences and implied meaning
  • recognize a writer’s opinions, attitudes and purpose
  • follow the development of an argument

You will be asked to read a passage of around 750 words and respond to related questions in the Reading test.

Format of Reading Test

A long text (ranges from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical). It has been selected for a non-specialist audience but is appropriate for people entering university courses.

Timing

20 minutes including the checking time

Around 13 questions

Blank-filling questions, multiple-choice questions and matching questions

Marks

Test components (Writing)

The Writing test is designed to assess a wide range of writing skills, including how well you

  • organize ideas
  • use a range of vocabulary and grammar accurately

Format of Writing Test

Write in a formal style in the Writing test. You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

40 minutes

Task Type

You will be asked to write an essay of at least 250 words.

Marks

Scores are reported in levels.

Test components (Speaking)

The Speaking test is designed to assess how well you can:

  • communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences
  • speak at length on a given topic using appropriate language
  • organize your ideas coherently
  • express and justify your opinions

You will talk to an examiner in the Speaking test. The test is interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get. The test will be recorded.

You will take the Speaking test at an official test venue or on ZOOM with the same high standard of identity verification and proctoring. You will be having the test with an examiner (either in person or online). The tests will be exactly the same in terms of content, scoring, timing, level of difficulty, question format and security arrangements.

Format of the Speaking test

The speaking test is a face-to-face /online interview conducted by an examiner. You will be asked questions related to a topic of general interest. The test assesses your ability to:

  • develop a given topic adequately and coherently;
  • use grammar accurately and appropriately;
  • use vocabulary accurately and appropriately;
  • pronounce words clearly and accurately, and use natural speech features, such as word stress and intonation, to enhance meanings effectively.

Task Type

Part 1: The examiner will ask you general questions on familiar topics, e.g. home, studies or interests.

Part 2: The examiner will give you a task card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will be given one minute to prepare and make notes. You will then be asked to talk for 1-2 minutes on the topic. The examiner will then ask you one or two questions on the same topic.
