Creative Writing Contest

Dear students,

Would you like to show your creative minds and share about yourself through English writing?

The Centre for Language in Education (CLE) is pleased to announce the Creative Writing Contest 2019-2020!

The contest is open to all students of the University. If you enjoy writing and would love your work to be published, then this may be the chance to achieve your goal! No matter how much (or how little!) writing experience you have, please take this chance to try something new by sharing your writing with us.

For this year’s contest, a picture will be uploaded to the ASLLC's Instagram and Facebook pages, and your composition should be about your interpretation of that picture.

The contest will open on Friday March 13th, 2020 and close on Friday April 10th, 2020 by 17:00.

Prizes will be awarded and all winning submissions will be published on our social media, and on the CLE’s Newsletter and IT Magazine. The Awards Ceremony will take place in early May 2020, where the winners are invited to share and discuss their work!

Here are a few contest guidelines:

Your submission must be related to the contest’s picture posted on our social media
Your entry can be in any format (e.g., poem, prose, short story, autobiography, fiction or non-fiction)
Your piece of writing should be 500 to 700 words max. If writing a poem, your entry should have a minimum of 12 lines.
Your paper must be written in English.
You must sign a plagiarism declaration sheet attesting that the work you submitted is your own
Your submission must be made before the deadline through a direct message on either our Instagram or Facebook page. Otherwise, it will not be counted.

This year’s contest has a twist! Your friends and peers will also get to vote on their favourite creations! Once the entries are received, they will be reviewed as follows:

Votes from other students (1 like = 1 vote) (Will account for 40% of the final decision)
Judges panel assessment (Judging is based on calibre of content, clarity of thought, creativity, originality and style of writing) (Will account for 60% of the final decision).

Events Timeline (2019-2020):

March 13th – Contest opens (make sure to check out our Instagram (@asllc) or Facebook page (@asllc.eduhk) to find out what the picture is).
April 10th – All first drafts should be submitted by 17:00.
From April 11^th until April 18^th – Entries will be posted on social media and students can vote on their favourite compositions.
Late April– Winners will be announced & winning entries will be re-posted on social media and published on the CLE’s Newsletter and IT Magazine.
Early May – Awards and Sharing Ceremony.
