Civic Education for Social Justice: A Case Study for a Poverty Camp

In Hong Kong secondary schools, 'service' has been traditionally considered as some kind of extra-curricular activities and as charity or voluntary work to the unprivileged people. It is seldom linked to learning and used to enhance students' awareness of the issue at the policy and political level. Based on the concept of 'service learning: from charity to social justice', this project use case study approach to study a Poverty Camp for secondary schools with an intention to explore:

(1) the perspective transformation of the students' understanding of the causes of poverty; and

(2) the learning of or the impact on the students in the cognitive, affective and behavioral domains.

Pilot Study of "Success for All" with Hong Kong Primary Students

The Success for All (SFA) programme is a research-based reform model developed by Robert Slavin and his associates at Johns Hopkins University. The SFA is based on the premise that all students can and must succeed in the early grades (Slavin, Madden, Dolan, & Wasik, 1996).

The premise of the SFA suggests that this programme is supportive of current Education reform initiatives in Hong Kong - particularly to those initiatives that seek to support early success in the foundation years of learning English.

Political Socialization of Democratic Citizenship in Hong Kong Secondary Schools

The civic education in Hong Kong has always been criticized as "de-politicized" and cannot match with the democratic development of Hong Kong. Since the return of the sovereignty in 1997, there are signs that civic education in Hong Kong has been "re-depoliticized". However, contradictory phenomenon was observed. The second IEA study indicated that Hong Kong students fare well in citizenship knowledge as compared internationally. In the two July 1 demonstrations in 2003 and 2004, many students and youth participated very actively and several youth political organizations were formed. This implies that some students have become very politically active and well prepared for democratic citizenship. How do the contextual factors influence students' active participation in democratic citizenship in Hong Kong?

The author will review and evaluate the status and performance in the education sectors of selected member countries; identify strategic interventions that would improve sector performance and benefit from external assistance; assess the interest and interventions, and recommend what ADB's catalytic role should be in the education sectors of the countries.

Student Constructions of Knowledge and Beliefs about Globalization and Their Relationship to the School Curriculum

This proposal represents the first phase of a larger project.  The broad purpose is to study Hong Kong students' understanding of and attitudes towards globalization.  It seeks to address two key issues: criticisms that have been leveled at the nature and purpose of global education and recent research in the area of political socialization that points to the limited effects of schooling, and in particular the curriculum, on political attitudes.  The study will identify the conceptual issues relating to the nature of globalization, analyse the extent to which these issues are embedded in the school curriculum and solicit the views of a sample of recently graduated high school students about their current understandings of and attitudes towards globalization and the sources of those understandings and their attitudes.

The Integration of Students, Content and Pedagogy Knowledge for Effective Teaching and Learning

This project aims at exploring factors that promote the actualization of effective teaching and learning for modules offered by EPA department. It includes a study focusing on three major interlocking components of students, content and pedagogy for good teaching (Kolis and Dunlap, 2004), suggesting an integrative and interaction approach to realizing effective teaching. In general, this departure will lead to a generation of better teacher education practice, and provide insights to stimulate more effective teaching and better promote student learning in particular, as Perry and Smart (1997) articulate. This study examines the interaction of these elements on research and practices that teaching members of the department have been experiencing and demonstrating. A multiple data collection strategy includes surveys, questionnaires, observation from departmental seminars and workshops, professional presentations, focused group and individual interviews. Information concerning student and staff perceptions collected on student needs and learning, professional studies content and instruction theories will help us reflect more on effective and high-performing teaching in term of promoting student learning.
