"What
Makes Effective Teaching" - Perceptions of Effective Teaching
among Teachers in Hong Kong Kindergartens
The study is to record a comparative account of 60 teachers’ perception
on effective teaching in five kindergartens as they tell their
own stories and criticize different teaching episodes in a lesson
study project. Teachers will explain their teaching decisions
that are grounded on evidence and express their views on others’
practice while viewing the set of videos on teaching. Discussions will tap insiders’ judgements
of the pedagogy of their own schools and of outsiders’ judgements of the pedagogy of one another’s schools.

A Comparative
Study of Art Curriculum Approaches to Effective Basic Education
in Hong Kong and Shanghai-Stage III
The research partially
based on a conceptual framework for the analysis of the school
curriculum and on the effective implementation of art(s) education
programmes. The research team also met with the research counterpart
members in Shanghai to conduct an evaluative analysis of their
formal art syllabus and other resources. The research team also
conducted case studies during the Shanghai visit. The outcome of
the findings of this phase could set firm foundation to promote
future comparative studies of the art curriculum in the local,

A Narrative
Inquiry into Experiences of Hong Kong Pre-school Teachers in
Understanding of Child Development
This is a research on
the experience of pre-school teachers in understanding of child
development. I understand that in-service pre-school teachers are
adults who go through the process of cognitive, language, moral,
social and physical development. They acquire knowledge of child
development through personal lived experience and from working
with children. It is essential to help them know what they know
and how they know, so that they could be in a better position to
understand child development and apply such knowledge into teaching
and learning.

An Exploratory
Study in the Learning Academic Concepts Through a Movement Activity
Programme in Hong Kong Kindergarten
The present study aims
to investigate the use of movement activities in enhancing academic
learning in kindergarten. One kindergarten will constitute the
sample of the study. Two K3 classes (5 years) will be randomly
allocated to an experimental group and a control group. The experimental
group will implement the movement activity programme designed by
the researcher while teaching the theme "motor vehicles".
The classroom teacher of the control group will develop her lesson
plan according to the learning objectives given by the researcher.
Academic concepts such as components of the motor vehicles, speed
and pathways will be tested before and after the programme. Results
from the tests will be compared to examine the causal relationship
between academic learning and the movement activity programme.
A range of research methods including video extracts, teacher diaries
and interviews will be used in this study to provide data concerning
children's learning outcomes during the programme.

Designing Curriculum
that Responds to Children's Interest and Needs
This project aims to document
one local example of school-based development of early childhood
curriculum that responds to children's interests and needs. One
60 minutes VCD, one 60 minutes video and a booklet were produced
that would be used as teaching material for the modules of curriculum

within and among schools by production of videos on simulated teaching.
Teachers in five kindergartens will take part in the project. Teachers
in each school will form a team unit. There will be five teams
in the project. Each team will develop a script on effective teaching
to be video-filmed. By doing so, teachers would select strategies
from the pool of experience of oneself or others to elicit children's

Does an Early
Start to Chinese Literacy Correlate with Enhanced Reading Performance
in Primary School? Follow-up of a Longitudinal Study in Hong
Kong and Beijing
The aim of this study
is to ascertain if early attainment of literacy skills is correlated
with enhanced reading performance in primary school. The study
tracks the progress of 200 young children first tested two years
previously in kindergarten to assess their literacy development
(Li, 2000). The earlier study showed that Hong Kong children's
Chinese literacy attainment was superior when compared with children
in Beijing and Singapore. The current study investigates whether
Hong Kong children's superiority is still evident two years later
or if the Beijing preschoolers, after being educated in a monolingual
society for two years, catch up with their counterparts in Hong
Kong. In addition, the study investigates educational policies
and curriculum in the two contexts, parents' and teachers' views
on home/school literacy practices, and children's attitudes towards
reading and knowledge about the purpose of reading.

Exemplars for
Early Childhood Education: Innovating Teaching and Learning with
ICT in Higher Education
The aim of this project
is to create a set of exemplar modules using ICT to enhance teaching
and learning outcomes. These modules have been carefully selected
from two of the programmes offered in Early Childhood and will
form the basis of sustained development in multi modal learning
for teacher educators as we move through the information age. The
modules represent learning areas that are fundamental to the field,
the use of ICT, health and well being, and creativity and the arts.
The design of these modules to a multi modal learning context has
been carefully planned so that they promote critical thinking,
problem solving, active learning and autonomous learning. These
features are recognized by the Institute as being those which we
should promote in our students and they are promoted in teacher
education programmes worldwide.

Expectations
and Experiences of Teachers, Parents and Children Concerning
Children Transition from Kindergarten to Primary school
This study investigates
the experiences and expectation of the teachers, parents and children
concerning children's transition and kindergarten to primary school.
Emphasis is given to the performance of the children in different
areas of development; the transitional activities and the competences
in different areas of development of the children were also the
focus of the investigation. Results would serve as references for
later evaluation of existing transitional practices or design of
effective transition programmes in local context. The means of
investigations of this study includes: questionnaires, semi-structured
interviews and observations. Findings from both questionnaires
and interviews show that most of the respondents agreed that strong
connections between the kindergarten, primary school and parents
could facilitate smooth transition to school.

Experiences
in English in Preschool Settings: Support for Preschools' Language
and Literacy Development
Combined qualitative and
quantitative methodologies were applied to provide a comprehensive
and accurate description of the pedagogical beliefs of preschool
teachers and the nature, quality and content of preschools' early
learning experiences in English in early childhood settings and
to correlate aspects of these dimensions with children's later
language and literacy achievement. Data from a survey questionnaire
of existing practices on the provision of early learning experiences;
semi-structured interviews of teachers and half-hour video-tapes
of English lessons were analyzed. Measures of preschoolers' language
and literacy included the Early Literacy Development Checklist,
a test of story comprehension and Mean Length of Utterance.

Fostering Problem-based
Learning at HKIEd Through Case Development
This proposal aims to
promote Problem Based Learning (PBL) in HKIEd through engaging
lecturers in the PBL process and in the development of PBL cases
for teacher education. Lecturers will develop ownership for the
PBL cases and be more likely to use the cases in teaching and more
interested to see them work, and as a result help to disseminate
PBL to students and other lecturers in the Institute. The implementation
of the cases will form the focus of another Teaching Development
Grant that succeeds the one being proposed here

A Pilot Study:
To Investigate the Content Validity and Test-retest Reliability
of the Parent-proxy Rating Scale, “Quality of Movement Performance
for Children”
Date was collected on
44 samples, all aged 5 to 6, in a regular kindergarten in May to
July, 2004. Upon consent, each parent completed 38
questions of a newly designed rating scale on quality of movement
performances for their child. Each
child was assessed with the Movement ABC battery by the researcher. Data was computed in July to August using
SPSS version 12 and analyzed. A
review panel consisting of four professionals working in the Child
Assessment Center in the Hospital Authority, all having over ten
to fifteen years of clinical experience with the pediatric population
was invited to fill out a review questionnaire and their feedback
comments were used to modify the content of the rating scale through
item reduction and generation. A larger scale research based on the results
of the pilot study will be launched through other research funds
in 2004 - 2005.

Implementation
Project Approach in Hong Kong Diocesan Kindergartens
The purpose of this project
is to help the teachers of Diocesan Kindergartens clarifying the
concepts of the Project approach, implement project approach smoothly
in teaching and enhancing children's learning in 9 Diocesan kindergartens
through a 2-year comprehensive staff development program. The first
year project aims at assisting each kindergarten to establish a
core school based curriculum development team for implementing
approach. Workshops were organized for the teachers and parents
to introduce the rationales and concepts of project. After the
workshops, project approach was adopted at each school and a project
initiated by the children was conducted. During the 10-day project
implemented in each kindergarten, peer observation and post teaching
conferences were conducted to develop the teachers' reflective
ability, clarify the concepts related to project approach and tackle
problems arisen during the implementation process evaluation questionnaires,
reflective journals and collective reflections were used to collect
data for analysis of the effect of the staff development programme.
Children's learning process was documented and analyzed to evaluate
the effect of the project approach.

Mathematics Learning in Pre-schools

Profiles of
CE(ECE) Year One Students Being Reading Tutors in ECLC
A total of 62 students
have worked in the ECLC as reading tutors since October, 2003 on
a weekly basis. They were required to fill in a record form every
time they finished reading to children. The record form consisted
of: 1) reading tutors' observation of whether the child is interested
in the reading activity; 2) reading tutors' judgment of the child's
understanding of the story, 3) their own perception to meet the
criteria of an outstanding reading tutor; and 4) questions being
raised for further discussions with lecturers. A systematic analysis
of this set of data would allow us to acquire an understanding
of reading tutors' perceptions of young children reading, and their
progress and concerns as reading tutors.

Promoting Early
Childhood Children's Holistic Learning Through Art Projects
To investigate the significant
benefits of the integrated/holistic learning experiences of early
childhood children through art projects. By documentation of children's
self-expressions in different media, it is envisaged that the underlying
factors that influence the child's creative learning, through self-expression
and interaction with different materials and people, would be uncovered.
Designing & implementing activities, observing and interviewing
both teachers and children as activities going on, all these would
be the main approaches for the investigation. The report would
be based on the analysis and evaluation of the activities.

The Characteristics
of Young Children's Moral Judgement
A study on children's
moral judgement was conducted. 40 preschool children (4-5-years-old)
were interviewed about a moral event concerning accidental and
deliberate materials damage. The main purpose of this study was
to re-examinate Piaget's theory of preschool children's moral judgements.
The design permitted systematical analysis of the effects of different
intentions on children's moral judgements. It was predicted that
preschoolers' moral judgements were not always based on the consequence
as Piaget suggested, but varied across different moral content.
It was also predicted that children as young as preschool age were
able to consider the intentions of the actor when making moral
judgements. The present study highlights the need for specificity
with regard to the situation when discussing children's moral judgements.

Understanding
Teaching and Teacher Development in Kindergartens in Hong Kong
This study is a follow-up
study to track teachers' development, after a school-based project
funded by the Quality Education Fund in 1999, spanning 24 months.
On the surface, the QEF project was an activity on video production
of simulated teaching. The hidden agenda was to facilitate peer
coaching and peer support on teachers' reflective teaching and
professionalism, with 60 teachers in five schools participating.
The primary aim of the study was to examine the potential of professional
discourse on teacher change after the two-year 'staff development'
project. Of particular interest were studying the nature of teacher
change, through workshops, peer review and team planning among
60 teachers in five teams and the impact of collegial interactions
on teachers' work and their thinking about their practice.

Young Children's
Understanding of Illness
The aims of this project
are (1) to assess young children's understanding of the causes
of contagious illnesses in contrast with causes of non-contagious
illnesses and injuries, and (2) to investigate young children's
concept of germs. An interview (to assess Aim 1) and a drawing
task (to assess Aim 2) will be conducted with 20 preschool children
in each of 2 age groups - 4-year-olds and 6-year-olds with no long-term
hospitalization experience and chronic illnesses from local kindergartens.

Little Eyes
on Tai Po 幼兒社區探索研究系列(一)之小眼睛看大埔
Hong Kong's kindergarten
teachers are all versed with principles of children-centeredness
or child-appropriateness, the value of play, the importance of
active learning etc. However, in practice, with plenty of "sound
reasons" such as the expectations of oriental parents, the
temptation of ready-made commercial textbooks/learning kits. Teachers
tend to resort to familiar means of rote learning and hard drills
on worksheets etc when working with young children. In
this research project, we would like to lead a group of "little
eyes" all by our own and invite preschool teachers, parents
as voluntary helpers in the project and observe us as early childhood
educators, how we communicate with young children and how we understand
young children thinking in the context of their authentic school
and community life.
