Does an Early Start to Chinese Literacy Correlate with Enhanced Reading Performance in Primary School? Follow-up of a Longitudinal Study in Hong Kong and Beijing

The aim of this study is to ascertain if early attainment of literacy skills is correlated with enhanced reading performance in primary school. The study tracks the progress of 200 young children first tested two years previously in kindergarten to assess their literacy development (Li, 2000). The earlier study showed that Hong Kong children's Chinese literacy attainment was superior when compared with children in Beijing and Singapore. The current study investigates whether Hong Kong children's superiority is still evident two years later or if the Beijing preschoolers, after being educated in a monolingual society for two years, catch up with their counterparts in Hong Kong. In addition, the study investigates educational policies and curriculum in the two contexts, parents' and teachers' views on home/school literacy practices, and children's attitudes towards reading and knowledge about the purpose of reading.

Profiles of CE(ECE) Year One Students Being Reading Tutors in ECLC

A total of 62 students have worked in the ECLC as reading tutors since October, 2003 on a weekly basis. They were required to fill in a record form every time they finished reading to children. The record form consisted of: 1) reading tutors' observation of whether the child is interested in the reading activity; 2) reading tutors' judgment of the child's understanding of the story, 3) their own perception to meet the criteria of an outstanding reading tutor; and 4) questions being raised for further discussions with lecturers. A systematic analysis of this set of data would allow us to acquire an understanding of reading tutors' perceptions of young children reading, and their progress and concerns as reading tutors.

Promoting Early Childhood Children's Holistic Learning Through Art Projects

To investigate the significant benefits of the integrated/holistic learning experiences of early childhood children through art projects. By documentation of children's self-expressions in different media, it is envisaged that the underlying factors that influence the child's creative learning, through self-expression and interaction with different materials and people, would be uncovered. Designing & implementing activities, observing and interviewing both teachers and children as activities going on, all these would be the main approaches for the investigation. The report would be based on the analysis and evaluation of the activities.

The Characteristics of Young Children's Moral Judgement

A study on children's moral judgement was conducted. 40 preschool children (4-5-years-old) were interviewed about a moral event concerning accidental and deliberate materials damage. The main purpose of this study was to re-examinate Piaget's theory of preschool children's moral judgements. The design permitted systematical analysis of the effects of different intentions on children's moral judgements. It was predicted that preschoolers' moral judgements were not always based on the consequence as Piaget suggested, but varied across different moral content. It was also predicted that children as young as preschool age were able to consider the intentions of the actor when making moral judgements. The present study highlights the need for specificity with regard to the situation when discussing children's moral judgements.

Understanding Teaching and Teacher Development in Kindergartens in Hong Kong

This study is a follow-up study to track teachers' development, after a school-based project funded by the Quality Education Fund in 1999, spanning 24 months. On the surface, the QEF project was an activity on video production of simulated teaching. The hidden agenda was to facilitate peer coaching and peer support on teachers' reflective teaching and professionalism, with 60 teachers in five schools participating. The primary aim of the study was to examine the potential of professional discourse on teacher change after the two-year 'staff development' project. Of particular interest were studying the nature of teacher change, through workshops, peer review and team planning among 60 teachers in five teams and the impact of collegial interactions on teachers' work and their thinking about their practice.

Little Eyes on Tai Po 幼兒社區探索研究系列(一)之小眼睛看大埔

Hong Kong's kindergarten teachers are all versed with principles of children-centeredness or child-appropriateness, the value of play, the importance of active learning etc. However, in practice, with plenty of "sound reasons" such as the expectations of oriental parents, the temptation of ready-made commercial textbooks/learning kits. Teachers tend to resort to familiar means of rote learning and hard drills on worksheets etc when working with young children. In this research project, we would like to lead a group of "little eyes" all by our own and invite preschool teachers, parents as voluntary helpers in the project and observe us as early childhood educators, how we communicate with young children and how we understand young children thinking in the context of their authentic school and community life.
