A Pilot Study
to Examine the Effectiveness of an Intervention Program for Gifted Primary
Students in Enhancing their Critical Thinking Skills and Attitudes This pilot study
was about examining closely the effectiveness of an intervention program
that was action-learning oriented and purposefully designed to improve
higher order thinking skills of around 90 Grades 4 and 5 students in
two Hong Kong primary schools.
The students were stratified and grouped (with both experimental
and control groups) to undergo a 12-month action learning process.
Pretest and posttest on various aspects of higher order thinking
skills were conducted. Repeated-measures
ANOVA were also conducted to examine potential gains over time. The evaluation of different gains in skills
and attitudes resulting from the intervention served to provide a valuable
blueprint for conducting a larger-scale study on higher order thinking
in future.
A Follow-up
Case Study of the Effectiveness of an Intervention Program for Gifted
Primary Students in Enhancing their Critical Thinking Skills and Attitudes Further to the
pilot study, a follow-up case was conducted in the two schools so that
multiple sources of data would be collected and converge to picture
a more comprehensive scene for evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention
program. In the research, the sources of data included
questionnaire studies (pre-test and posttest self-description questionnaires,
interim and final evaluation questionnaires), case studies (3 case students
were identified), interview (individual and group), observations (classroom
teaching and learning, and meetings) and document study (such as the
program materials, worksheets, students’ portfolios, reflective journals
and research reports).
A Study of the
Roles and Duties of Secondary 1 to 3 Form Teachers in Hong Kong Secondary
Schools The study aims at investigating
the current roles & duties of form teachers at senior levels in
primary schools, and exploring the changing roles of form teachers in
the Education Reforms, Education Blueprint for the 21st century. In
Hong Kong, there is no official document describing the duties of a
form teacher as it may be considered as a school-based policy. Lam &
Ho (1995) analyzed the functions of form teachers in secondary school
administration. Five areas are categorized. They are academic,
discipline, general affairs, public relations and personnel. A qualitative
and quantitative study is employed. The developed questionnaire will
be sent to 100 local primary schools, and statistical data about the
role and duties of form-teachers analyzed. In the mean time, structured
interviews will be carried out to look for the teachers’ perceived views
on the changing roles during the present unprecedented educational reform.
At the end, some relevant solutions to the concern problems are suggested.
Addressing the
Lifelong Learning Needs of Primary School Teachers: Development of In-service
Teacher Education The purpose of this project
is to study the learning needs of teachers attending the primary retraining
programs, to identify their in-service education ladder and examine
the implications for development of in-service education program. Questionnaire
findings indicate that teachers are strong in "classroom management",
"subject knowledge", "communication with colleagues",
and "fulfillment of teachers' role" (with simple means between
3.71 to 3.95). "Meeting special education needs of students",
"curriculum adaptation", "life wide learning", "design
of school-based curriculum", "subject integration", and
"education for newly arrived children" are the areas that
teachers felt their competency as low (simple means below 3). These
are the areas that teachers felt they needed improvement.

Reference Materials Produced by Music Experts for the International
Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) World Music Days 2002 Contemporary
Music Education Campaign This project proposed that
an evaluation be conducted with an aim to provide an
materials of understanding of how primary and secondary teachers view
the practicality of the reference this contemporary music education
campaign. The teachers were asked to examine the contents of the materials
and they would be surveyed and interviewed. Overall, the teachers appreciated
the value of the materials but most of them also commented that the
materials could be modified and simplified. They also gave some constructive
suggestions for further improvement of the materials.
The Creative
Process of Multi-media Composition--Visual Image and Music The project investigates
how the music technology enhances the student's work in the composition,
especially dealing with the visual thinking and musical thinking skills.
The Effects
of Sharing Among Teachers on Professional Development in China This is a continued research
study to investigate how staff development is conducted in schools of
China and how practitioners perceive the system and what implications
it has in relation to the staff development practice in Hong Kong. In
the research, a longitudinal case study approach, based on an interpretive
model, is adopted. Concerning the study samples, three pairs of mentors
and novice teachers in three secondary schools are studied. Other than
sharing by interviews, they are invited to write monthly journals reporting
the progress of the novice teachers in 2000-2001 academic year.
Other methods include classroom observations and study of documents.
