Celebrating and Sharing Excellence of Innovative Teaching Practices

Staff of the School of Language in Education are responsible for a number of excellent teaching and learning practices and innovations. These are known to colleagues working in the various contexts in which they have been developed, but not by staff of the school as a whole. This means that many excellent practices are unknown to a wider audience of staff with the result that the impact on teaching and learning in general is less significant than it might be. The school seeks funding to support the purchase of materials and resources and the recruitment of two research assistants to assist staff in bringing these excellent practices and innovations to the attention of this wider audience so that more staff of the School can learn from each others' work. This is intended to lead to a general improvement in the quality of teaching and learning in the Schools, an improved culture of sharing and exchanging good practice among academic colleagues. Incidental benefits of the project might include cross-linguistic, inter-departmental benefits such as greater understanding of approaches adopted by staff in other departments and units to solving common problems relating to language teacher education. Enhanced perceptions of the value of existing achievement of the School are expected to have a beneficial effect on staff morale, their perception of their place within the School and a willingness to experiment with different approaches.

The Changing Role of Women through the Study of Modern Literature in China in the 1930s and 40s

It adopts the qualitative research approach and focuses on the role of women. It examines the fictions in Shanghai in the 1930s and 40s to find out the relationship between the role of women and the development of society. A literature search on the works of writers in Shanghai will be conducted. Psychological and metropolian theories will be utilised for analysis. It is hoped that the characteristics of women as depicted in the works of the writers can be identified and its changing roles in the transformation of the city be analysed. With the help of the questionnaire, an attempt is made to study the attitude of teachers to gender role with a view to promoting better awareness and critical reflection.

Conversion of the English Language Curriculum I PGDE Secondary P/T Module to a Flexible Learning Format

The project is to develop web-based teaching materials to be delivered using the Next-Ed-Blackboard platform.  The materials at present taught in the English Language Curriculum I module to PGDE Secondary P/T students will initially be converted to html format with hypertext links.  This material will then be converted to enable delivery on the Next-Ed-Blackboard platform.  This will allow for flexibility in learning and hopeful foster greater peer-to-peer interaction and learning.

Development of a Classroom Language Data Bank Based on an Exploration of Teachers' Language Use in Hong Kong Language Classrooms

This project aimed at setting up a data bank of digitized video-taped authentic, naturally occurring classroom language episodes in Chinese, Putonghua and English.  Data collected were analysed in order to identify the characteristics and key components of effective teacher language output with particular attention to the language of interaction and the language of instruction.  Based on the results of the analysis, teaching materials have been produced in the purpose of developing competence in the effective use of language for classroom instruction and for encouraging the interaction necessary for language learning to take place.

Eliciting the Problems and the Strategies of Pre-service ELT Teachers with Lesson Planning and Implementation in a Practicum

The purpose of this project is to conduct a retrospective reflective analysis of the planning and implementation of pre-service teacher in the practicum.  Research questions: How do pre-service teachers put theories into practice in lesson planning in the practicum? This question can be elaborated in the following two questions: 1) what are the concern and problems of pre-service teachers in lesson planning and implementation and how do they address the problems in the practicum? 2) how do the pre-service teachers structure and formulate their lesson plans to cater to the real needs and interest of their pupils in the schools?  The methodology: In order to explore the two questions, the project will collect data through learning journals, interviews and some document analysis.

Exploring the Effectiveness of a Short-Term Overseas English Language Immersion Programme for B.Ed Students

In this project we aim to explore the language, cultural and personal benefits of a short-term overseas English language immersion programme with a view to determining answers to the following questions: 1. What actually takes place at successful English language teaching centres and in successful home placements in 3 different countries? 2. What are the language and personal benefits afforded by short-term immersion? 3. What are the student attitudes that may affect the learning of English as a second language during short-term immersion? 4. How do participants respond to home placements in a foreign country and how might participant response impact upon language learning during the immersion programme?

Identities and Language Attitudes of the Post-colonial Generation in Hong Kong Secondary Schools

This project is to find out how students of the post-colonial generation perceive their ethnolinguistic identity, and the status, value and importance of the three spoken varieties (i.e. Cantonese, Putonghua and English) in the new socio-political context of Hong Kong. A total of 1048 F.3 students from 28 Hong Kong secondary schools participated in the project. They answered a questionnaire which includes a matched-guise test. In addition, focus-group interviews were conducted with a selection of 48 students. The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to provide an overview of the ethnolinguistic identity of the first post-colonial secondary school generation and their attitudes towards Cantonese, Putonghua and English; 2) to identify the factors which are the most significant in the construction of language attitudes.

Task-based learning in English in Hong Kong Secondary Schools

Schools are the crucial agent of change and teachers are key elements in the process (Fullan, 1991). This study focuses on the micro level (school organisation and teacher levels) and charts the impact of a wide-ranging intended reform in an area of the curriculum (secondary schools) in Hong Kong which is particularly resistant to change because of the prevailing conceptions of teaching, learning and of knowledge, and the backwash from public examinations.  The potential for tensions to appear is great, which makes this an especially fruitful study.  This study is not adopting a fidelity model which measures TBL in schools against intended or planned use.  It is using a mutual adaptation perspective to look at how and why TBL is manifested differently in different schools and classrooms in which their unique contexts interplay with various factors mentioned earlier.

Development of a Classroom Language Data Bank Based on an Exploration of Teachers' Language Use in Hong Kong Language Classrooms

This project aimed at setting up a data bank of digitised video-taped authentic, naturally occuring classroom language episodes in Chinese, Putonghua and English.

Development of a Medium of Instruction Policy for HKIEd

This project aimed to gather information pertinent to the formulation of an Institute wide Medium of Instruction policy.  It involved a contextual review looking at local precedents and gathering the views of HKIEd staff and students on key MoI issues by means of focus group discussion and interviews.  The interview protocol was developed into a questionnaire and after piloting administered to all staff and a representative sample of students.  Results were analysed with a view to making recommendations for a provisional policy statement submitted to the Institute's Academic Planning and Development Committee for finalisation of the policy.
