A Pilot Study of Assessing Students' Performance in Art in Hong Kong Secondary Schools

The purpose of this research was to examine the current assessment practice in art and to produce exemplars to help secondary art teachers reach a common understanding in assessing students’ artwork. First a questionnaire was administered to twenty participants in in-service secondary programmes as a pilot to a large-scale survey to be conducted next year. Second, four art teachers collected samples of students’ work from one unit of their teaching to illustrate the criteria associated with achieving the expected learning outcomes. Examples of three achievement standards were included in each unit.

Teaching Chinese Traditional Music in Hong Kong: A Comparison of the Effectiveness of the Two Teaching Approaches

This research aims at evaluating which teaching approach that advocated by Keith Swanwick (Swanwick, 1988) and Robert Walker (Walker, 1990) is likely to be more powerful and effective to teach traditional Chinese music for secondary school students, and help them to appreciate Chinese culture through Chinese music. An experimental design will be used to compare the two approaches. Data of students' attitude and musical understanding of the taught traditional Chinese music will be collected using a five-point likert scale attitude inventory, written response on the musical understanding. Data of teachers' comment and evaluation of the two teaching strategies will be collected by semi-structured interviews and written reflections on the lessons taught and students' feedback. Analysis of teaching strategies will be undertaken utilizing themes derived from interviews and reflections of teachers and students.  Analysis of variance, a 2 x 2 (2 treatments x 2 teachers) and descriptive statistics will be used to analyze the difference of attitude of the two treatments groups and the frequency of different attitude.

The Perceptions of Hong Kong Primary Art Teachers Using Websites in their Teaching

In this information age, the World Wide Web has become one of the electronic media providing resources for teachers. In 1997, the Government demonstrated its serious commitment to IT in education.  But at that time, there was little evidence of a strong IT culture in primary schools, and teachers in general had little experience in using IT.  Four years later, in 2001, the Principal Investigator carried out research into Hong Kong primary art teachers’ experiences in computer use their views on teaching and learning through web sites.  Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used.  Data for this study were collected from questionnaires, focus group discussion and individual interviews.
