Comparative Study of Art Curriculum Approaches to Effective Basic Education
in Hong Kong and Shanghai - Stage III |
This
project is a continuation of a large-scale comparative curriculum research which
builds on a comprehensive review of the development of HK art education and
an investigation of the implementation of the HK art curriculum in the
previous two stages. The
Shanghai team will conduct a similar questionnaire survey. Case studies in selected schools in
HK and Shanghai will also be conducted.
Comparative studies will be made between the two teams in April 2002
through documentary analysis and research findings. |

Pilot Research Study on Graduates of the School of Creative Arts, Sciences
and Technology |
1)
To collect information from relevant stakeholders on whether and how the
courses of SCAST have benefited our graduates as members of the teaching
profession; 2) to provide information that will guide further programme
development work; and 3) based on the experience of the exercise, to revise
the data gathering methods so that the effectiveness and efficiency of future
studies on graduates can be further improved. |

A
Pilot Study of Assessing Students' Performance in Art in Hong Kong Secondary
Schools |
The
purpose of this research was to examine the current assessment practice in
art and to produce exemplars to help secondary art teachers reach a common
understanding in assessing students’ artwork. First a questionnaire was
administered to twenty participants in in-service secondary programmes as a
pilot to a large-scale survey to be conducted next year. Second, four art
teachers collected samples of students’ work from one unit of their teaching
to illustrate the criteria associated with achieving the expected learning
outcomes. Examples of three achievement standards were included in each unit. |

Aesthetic
Experience in a Pedagogical Context:
A Phenomenological Study |
This
study examines the nature of aesthetic experience and its potential to
contribute to the learning of art.
By describing the essential nature of aesthetic experience, portraying
the relationship between objects and viewers, and specifying the ways in
which aesthetic experience works when people make decisions related to art,
this study will contribute to the understanding of the role of aesthetic
experience in art education.
Particularly, the study will shed new lights on the present curriculum
for pre-service art teachers and primary school students. |

Art
Appreciation in Primary Schools - An Interactive Learning Programme |
The
project aims to present some art educational materials as to speed up student
teachers' learning and teaching by using computer technologies and to enable
the student teachers to apply IT in the teaching and learning of art in
primary schools. During the process
of designing some interactive teaching and learning activities, the student
teachers will learn to clarify their instructional techniques and acquire a
thorough understanding of the teaching materials to be included in the
presentation of the project. The
project will be presented in the form of a CD ROM on art appreciation with
interactive art appreciation activities for primary classroom teaching. The theme of the project is about
integrating different arts forms in the teaching of visual art appreciation
and art making. |

project aims to produce a pedagogical CD-ROM for modules covering art
historical elements in the BEd curriculum. Through the integration of latest academic and
technological developments in the teaching and learning of art appreciation
and criticism, the CD-ROM enables the provision of rich contextual and formal
information to works of art, presentation of sculptural and architectural
work in multiple perspectives, incorporation of interactive activities and
the linkage of references and resources via the internet. Instead of learning to see in a
prescribed way, students are granted the autonomy to perceive art objects
with independent thinking by using the rich information obtained from the

Teaching
Chinese Traditional Music in Hong Kong:
A Comparison of the Effectiveness of the Two Teaching Approaches |
This
research aims at evaluating which teaching approach that advocated by Keith
Swanwick (Swanwick, 1988) and Robert Walker (Walker, 1990) is likely to be more
powerful and effective to teach traditional Chinese music for secondary
school students, and help them to appreciate Chinese culture through Chinese
music. An experimental design will be used to compare the two approaches.
Data of students' attitude and musical understanding of the taught
traditional Chinese music will be collected using a five-point likert scale
attitude inventory, written response on the musical understanding. Data of
teachers' comment and evaluation of the two teaching strategies will be
collected by semi-structured interviews and written reflections on the
lessons taught and students' feedback. Analysis of teaching strategies will
be undertaken utilizing themes derived from interviews and reflections of
teachers and students. Analysis
of variance, a 2 x 2 (2 treatments x 2 teachers) and descriptive statistics
will be used to analyze the difference of attitude of the two treatments
groups and the frequency of different attitude. |

supporting self-evaluation of students' learning and the development of
lecturer's teaching; (iii) the way the students participate in this programme
shapes their understanding of themselves as teachers (professional identity)

The
Perceptions of Hong Kong Primary Art Teachers Using Websites in their
Teaching |
In
this information age, the World Wide Web has become one of the electronic media
providing resources for teachers. In 1997, the Government demonstrated its
serious commitment to IT in education.
But at that time, there was little evidence of a strong IT culture in
primary schools, and teachers in general had little experience in using
IT. Four years later, in 2001, the Principal Investigator carried out research into Hong Kong primary art teachers’
experiences in computer use their views on teaching and learning through web
sites. Quantitative and
qualitative research methods were used.
Data for this study were collected from questionnaires, focus group
discussion and individual interviews. |
