C&I Research Seminar Explores Teacher Feedback Literacy in Higher Education

2026-10-02

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) hosted a research seminar, “‘Doing’ Teacher Feedback Literacy in Higher Education: Within and Beyond the Individual,” on 2 October 2026. The seminar was delivered by Turkan Istencioglu, Visiting PhD Student from the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE), Deakin University, and chaired by Dr. Lan Yang (Joy), Associate Professor and Associate Head (Research), C&I.

This hybrid seminar attracted 25 registraints, primarily from C&I colleagues and postgraduate students, the key target groups for the event.

Co-supervised by Professor Phillip Dawson, Professor David Boud, and Dr. Lan Yang, Turkan shared her doctoral research on teacher feedback literacy and how teachers design and enact feedback processes that support students’ engagement with feedback. A particular highlight was Turkan’s presentation of a progressive PhD research design comprising five interconnected studies. Moving from conceptual and framework development to quantitative validation, qualitative investigation, and integration of evidence, the programme illustrated how complementary studies can be systematically connected to address a complex educational research problem.

Participant evaluation was highly positive: 88.9% strongly agreed and 11.1% agreed across all four evaluation areas, including understanding of teacher feedback literacy, clarity of the presentation, reflection on feedback practices, and ideas for further application or research.

Written feedback reinforced these results. Participants particularly valued the rigour of Turkan’s research design and its relevance to their own research development. One participant commented, “Turkan presented a very impressive and rigorous research design. I learned a lot from her sharing, and it gave me inspiration for my own research design.” Another commented, “I learned a lot for my PhD journey,” highlighting the value of the seminar for postgraduate researchers developing their own research programmes.

The seminar provided a valuable forum for connecting C&I’s postgraduate research community with an international doctoral researcher co-supervised across EdUHK and Deakin University in Melbourne, while strengthening C&I’s global research engagement in teacher feedback literacy.
