C&I Colleagues Develop Conceptual Model of AI-Assisted Feedback in Systematic Review Published in Computers and Education Open

2026-01-20

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I), The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), announces the publication of a systematic literature review titled Unraveling the mechanisms and effectiveness of AI-assisted feedback in education in Computers and Education Open, an international peer-reviewed journal.

The paper is authored by Dr Shen Ba, Dr Lan Yang, Professor Zi Yan, and Professor Chee Kit Looi (Department of Curriculum and Instruction, EdUHK), in collaboration with Professor Dragan Gašević (Monash University, Australia). The review synthesises evidence from 129 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2014 and 2023 that examined the use of artificial intelligence, including generative AI, to support feedback in educational settings.

A central contribution of the review is the development of an integrative conceptual model of AI-assisted feedback. Drawing on established feedback theory and the Self-System Model of Motivational Development, the model organises prior studies across interconnected dimensions: AI mechanisms and data sources (macro), pedagogical feedback focus (meso), feedback complexity (micro), and learner-related processes and outcomes, including perceptions, actions, and learning outcomes. This framework provides a structured lens for understanding how different configurations of AI-assisted feedback have been studied and how they relate to learner experiences.

The publication highlights C&I’s leading role at EdUHK in advancing theory-informed and learner-centred research on feedback and assessment, while also reflecting sustained cross-institutional collaboration with international scholars in the field of AI-supported learning.
