The Centre for Governance and Citizenship (CGC) held a seminar on "Internationalisation or Englishisation? Medium of Instruction in Today’s Universities", conducted by Professor Andy Kirkpatrick, on 7 May 2010 (Friday), 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, at Room B3-P-13, Tai Po Campus.

Professor Kirkpatrick is the Chair Professor of English as International Language, the Hong Kong Institute of Education. In this seminar, Prof Kirkpatrick will first review the rapidly increasing role(s) English is playing in higher education in both Europe and Asia, and argue that the shift to English is threatening the role and status of other languages, and scholarship in languages other than English. In this sense, internationalization may actually be inimical to cultural diversity and the fostering of civic and intercultural awareness, needs that are essential for higher education in today’s world, as argued by Dr Ng Shun Wing in his recent CGC seminar this January, ‘What is missing in the internationalization of higher education in a time of globalization in the Asia-Pacific region?’ Professor Kirkpatrick shall argue that this aspect of the so-called internationalisation of higher education has clear and worrying implications for notions of citizenship and identity, exemplifying this by considering the context of universities in Hong Kong. He shall conclude by considering whether the adoption of some form of bilingual policy in Hong Kong universities is feasible.
Professor Kirkpatrick is currently Director of the Institute’s Research Centre for Language Education and Acquisition in Multilingual Societies (RCLEAMS). He has two new books currently in press, English as a Lingua Franca in ASEAN: A Multilingual Model (Hong Kong University Press), and Routledge’s Handbook of World Englishes, of which he is the sole editor. With Saran Gill, he is the author of English in Asian and European Higher Education for The Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics (Wiley-Blackwell).
