In the face of globally rapid technological and economic developments, teacher education institutions (TEIs) in Asia are challenged to prepare teachers who are open to new ideas, open to new practices and information and communication technologies (ICT), open to learn how to learn, unlearn and relearn, and to understand and accept the need for change. The pre-service teacher education programs in these institutions play a crucial role in preparing such quality teachers for schools during their apprenticeship phase. These programs also groom pre-service teachers to be change agents and ICT champions in schools; equipping them with the appropriate pedagogies to select and integrate ICT in the curriculum to improve student learning outcomes. Based on the documentation of the good practices and lessons learnt from selected TEIs in eight Asian countries (Hong Kong, Indonesia, Mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand), the main aim of this paper is to discuss the strategic dimensions within Asian TEIs that support the use of ICT to prepare teachers to teach and learn in 21st century schools and classrooms.
About the Speaker:
Professor LIM Cher Ping is a Professor of Curriculum and Innovations, and the Director of the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. In the last 10 years, he has been the principal investigator of several major and high impact research projects in Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore that include: (1) Effective Integration of IT in Singapore Schools: Pedagogical and Policy Implications, (2) Learning Objects and Cultural Settings, Digital Curricular Literacies, (3) 3D Multi-User Virtual Environments in Schools, (4) Improving the Quality and Quantity of Teachers in the Asia-Pacific, (5) Using Digital Representations of Work for Authentic and Reliable Performance Assessment in Senior Secondary School Courses, and (6) Information and Communication Technologies in Teacher Education: Capacity Building of Asian Teacher Education Institutions. To date, Professor Lim has provided technical consultancy services to UNESCO, Inter-American Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, World Links, Microsoft, Sampoerna Foundation, universities, schools and governments in the areas for teacher professional development, education policies and assessments. He has also been serving as keynote speakers, invited speakers and panelists in various international conferences.
