“More than 'kids'! Multiple perspectives on young children as citizens”

Children are commonly seen as future citizens that need to be developed. Treating children of younger ages as citizens of contemporary society is simply unimaginable. Compared with adults, children’s contributions and significance in society are often discounted. Do young children really have the ability to play an active role in public life? How may adults rethink their practice in schools, families, governments, and other settings so as to make space for young children to voice out for themselves as fellow citizens? To take their perspectives seriously for the betterment of society would require a fundamental paradigm shift among educators, parents, policymakers, and child advocates.  At this forum, Dr. Ben Mardell will present his research findings on a number of projects with young children in the US. Discussions will follow after invited guests have responded to the presentation from various angles.

Young Children as Citizens

 

Ben Mardell is an associate professor in early childhood education at Lesley University and was a researcher on the Making Learning Visible Project at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. For the past 30 years, Ben has taught and conducted research with various age groups of young children, including a year teaching in Hong Kong.  Ben is a co-author of Visible Learners: Promoting Reggio-Inspired Approaches in All Schools, Making Learning Visible: Children as Individual and Group Learners and Making Teaching Visible: Documentation of Individual and Group Learning as Professional Development. He is the author of From Basketball to the Beatles: In Search of Compelling Early Childhood Curriculum and Growing Up in Child Care: A Case For Quality Early Education. Ben enjoys competing in sprint triathlons.
